Southbank Sandpit: Maps and Territories


A game of Trap Street

The next Sandpit will be FREE, and will take place on 22 February 2010 at the Southbank Centre, in the Spirit Level at Royal Festival Hall. This month artists and designers have created games around the theme of “Maps and Territories”, so there’ll be exploration, discovery, confusion, lies, and trying to remember which way is north. Sneak and follow, deduce and scurry, analyse and draw; think about maps, follow them or create them.

Sign-ups for individual games start at 6:30, and play begins at 7pm.

Broken Arrow

Work as a team to move together through riddled tasks you should not have encountered; make sure you don’t get caught when preparing for what lies ahead.

Casino Capitalism

A frantic game of wheeler-dealing in the financial markets. Try to buy low, sell high, outfox your rivals and avoid the market crashes!

20 players. Designed by Tom Williams.

Hop, Skip and Map

The map is the territory: build it up as you move around, but make sure you leave enough cartographic supplies to get yourself home.

15 players.

Phone Box Frenzy

There’s been a mobile-murder at the Southbank Centre; it’s up to you to discover which phone box is responsible and b-ring them to justice.

Pingus

Guide as many of your lemmings safely through a course of treacherous obstacles, without letting them die - and then take your own turn at being a lemming.

Prediction

A quiz show with a twist: predicting the future is easy. Making it happen is the tricky part.

4 contestants and a playing audience. Designed by Anna Wexler and Tyler Martin.

Speed of Reaction

Mobile phones, QR codes, envelopes, snapshots, a mysterious film and fast reactions help your team solve puzzles and push you to ask your own questions.

15 players at a time. Created by Yolanda de los Bueis and produced by Olivia Bellas.

Utilitarian Geography

The one chance you will get to redraw the map the way you’d like it. Wish that your girlfriend’s house in Swindon was a little more convenient? Wouldn’t it be great if Edinburgh was sunnier? Prefer that Birmingham had it’s own island? Rebuild the UK as you see fit!

Plus there’ll be all the equipment for our usual pick-up-and-play games, from the Book Game through Werewolf.
