Sandpit #4: G.K. Chesterton at Trashy
Saturday 10 May

Battersea Arts Centre.
Battersea Arts Centre by mattxb

For Sandpit #4 we’re letting our game-designers and actors creep above-ground, eyes blinking at the sudden light of Spring, and sending them to Battersea, where writer G.K. Chesterton used to live and where BAC’s Burst Festival is about to kick off. To open the festival comes Trashy, a party themed around play, at which the Sandpit (along with Sandpit-friends Coney) will be hosting a night of Battersea, Chesterton and fun-themed games.

We’ve got skipping and asparagus, conversation and the tragedy of the commons; and elsewhere at the party there’ll be den-building, live-action Knightmare, perpetual table tennis, a staring competition, and more. Please note that Trashy often sells out so tickets may not be available at the door; it’s a good idea to book tickets at the BAC website, £10 or £6 for concession (and a 3 for 2 deal running at the moment) (you want the “A Trashy Multi-Artform Bingo Blowout”, which the Sandpit is part of).

Schedule

We’re running the Sandpit a bit differently this time — as usual there are some games that you can sign up to, but we’ll also be repeating a few of these games again if enough people want to play, and there’ll be helpful Sandpit people around to start games like Foldover, Nomic and Gype. If there’s a game that particularly appeals you should probably still want to book to make sure you get a space, but if you want to just turn up there’ll be plenty to do as well. Remember you will need a ticket to Trashy to attend, available from BAC.

The Man Who Was Thursday

Low-key game of spies and trading. Which day of the week are you - and can you become Thursday before the game ends?

Any time from 7:00-10:30, low-key play throughout the night. 71 places, first-come first-served on the night.

Poets versus Policemen

Pick your side and get to work. Start playing whenever you like, and take as much time as you want to spend.

Any time from 7:00-11:00, low-key play throughout the night. Unlimited places.

Common Ground

Sheep-farming and socialising in neighbouring fields. From Coney.

7:30-8:30 and 10:00-11:00, 40 places each game.

Conversation Piece

An irreverent cocktail party game for hyperactive socialites. Do some rapid socialising in order to locate likeminded conversationalists but be careful — you wouldn’t want to get stuck with a bore! From Halal Kebab Hut.

8:00-8:30 and 9:00-9:30. 18 places each game.

Off With Your Head

Returning from Sandpit #3, it’s a cut-throat game where you are the cards.

8:30-9:00, may repeat later. 12 places.

Skipping Chesterton

Is it a skipping game? Is it a game where you dress up as G.K. Chesterton? Yes.

9:00-9:15, may run more than once. 6 places.

Asparagus

The etiquette of asparagus is always confusing, and more so than usual at ten o’clock at night. Negotiate social propriety in the race to finish yours first.

9:30-9:45. 10 places, may run more than once

Ongoing games

Games playable throughout the night will include Paper Telephone, 1000 Blank White Cards, The Book Game, Nomic, Mao, Dadaist Pursuit and Gype. No registration required, just grab a ruleset and find some players, or wait for someone from the Sandpit to start a game.

7:00 - midnight. Unlimited places.
